Everything you need to know about publishing with up//root

General Criteria

Our intended audience is broad and inclusive of folks from all disciplines. We seek to publish transformative and disruptive work that situates the information and knowledge making world across disciplines.

We accept all kinds of creative expression including, but not limited to, essays, personal reflections, cultural commentary, research, poetry, audio/video, illustration, etc.

You do not need to be a practitioner, educator or student in the information sciences to submit your work. We encourage interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches, analyses, and lenses. Be uncompromising as you center justice. up//root welcomes writers of all experiences levels.

We use the following criteria to select what we publish:

  • Original work that is not published elsewhere.

  • Interrogates coloniality, white supremacy, patriarchy, white feminism, and/or racial capitalism as they impact the information/knowledge work landscape.

  • Cites BIPOC exclusively. NOTE: If you find it necessary to engage work of the oppressors, we welcome and will consider your reasons for each citation.

  • Uses accessible language and clearly explains complex terminology.
